According to the expert reviewers at the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ), this textbook does a good job comprehensively addressing the five key components of early reading instruction (phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) for future elementary teachers. We recommend it!- The Teaching Reading Sourcebook is a good textbook and a valuable resource for classroom teachers at all levels. The Common Core Standards are specifically referenced throughout.- The Big Five: The Sourcebook covers all essential reading skills from pre-reading through proficiency with an emphasis on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension as recommended by the National Reading Panel.- A clear structure is followed throughout the book. Each chapter is structured as What, Why, When, and How. Each section includes a summary of the research findings as well as a bibliography for further reading.- Lesson Plans and Activities: The most practical aspect of this textbook is the sample lesson plans and activities structured as direct and explicit instruction. The sample lessons can be used as in-class practice or in the practicum. Each section also includes strategies for ELLs and the struggling reader. Informal assessments are provided throughout.- The supplementary materials may be used for practices. Chapters also include discussion questions, which provide students opportunities to articulate what they have learned. The textbook, taught well, is not only convenient for instructors but will also prepare teacher candidates to be effective reading instructors from day one of their professional practice.- Research on reading instruction is ongoing and instructors need to keep abreast of the latest findings and supplement any textbook with what has been scientifically found to be most effective. Although users of the Teaching Reading Sourcebook may wish more information were provided on ELLs and struggling readers, these critical topics are typically taught as separate courses.- The Teaching Reading Sourcebook is highly recommended.NCTQ is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit research and policy organization committed to ensuring that every child has access to effective teachers and every teacher has the opportunity to become effective. We conduct research to assist states, districts, and teacher prep programs with teacher quality issues. We don't just call attention to what's wrong, but offer concrete solutions to help solve teacher quality challenges. Identifying good and bad textbooks used in teacher preparation in reading is one such solution.

This book is great and very informative. I was required to purchase it for a class, and I have found it very helpful in giving strategies that I can implement with my students quickly. The book is well organized, and easy to read. I'm glad I own it. However, the book is falling apart. I use the book often, but I wouldn't say I'm rough on it. I don't throw it around and it stays at home on my desk. With normal page turning, during the first use I had three pages fall out. I'm constantly having to tape pages back in, and it makes turning other pages awkward. It is frustrating!

Teaching Reading Sourcebook offers detailed and useful information. However, the book arrived with bent corners and wrinkled pages. I believe the book must have been damaged during shipping. Normally, this isn't something that would bother me. In this particular case, I paid extra to have a new book- $60.00. I should have received a book in new condition. It wasn't worth the time or effort to exchange the book.

This book is very useful! I bought it for a graduate course but have found myself referencing the techniques and activities suggested. This book has many useful activities and worksheet examples. I am a third grade teacher and I have used a few activities in my own classroom already with great success. I definitely recommend this book for reading teachers at the elementary level.

I bought this book for a class, and it is filled with fantastic information and useful tools for teachers! Definitely, a must own for future or current teachers.

This edition is filled with information. It is almost double the size of the previous edition. I do not own the previous edition but have used it in the past. I wanted to buy one to have for myself. I have not been able to use it yet, but I am excited by all the information.

Very great book and I highly recommend it. An ESL teacher's must-have. This book has helped me to address multiple points of entry formerly known as "differentiation" in NYC public schools. The book is easy to read with short chapters. The best part is it has lesson plans that are right on the money unlike plans that I've looked at on websites for ideas that require a complete overhaul. Great book.

The book is thorough, and provides samples in the back. The book is well organized and informative. The book has a lot of pages, but uses many illustrations to support the content.
